Erica was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Her father Gustaf was head of the Hildegard Group, which held immense influence behind the scenes throughout Kumen due to his charisma and a few greased palms. Erica, however, refused to be the prim and proper heir that Gustaf wanted, and was brash, violent, and a troublemaker.
Growing up in the slums, her best friend was a tomboy who went by Sehr, whose family also had a stake in Kumen, though their business was much shakier, taking part in shady practices. Erica and Sehr spent many of their days together, until one day, Sehr stopped coming.
Erica later learned that the reason Sehr, or rather Saoirse, had disappeared was that Sehr's family's business had collapsed, and her father was presumed to have committed suicide. To say that Erica was upset would be understating it, and her troublemaking nature came out more than ever, as Erica began to go down into Kumen's slums, picking fights in bars.
During one of these fights, she finally met with Saoirse again, out on the street in the slums, and they mutually took out their frustrations on the lowlifes living down there, but then, Saoirse disappeared once again.
Saoirse had been taken into slavery and sold off. Erica refused to allow this, taking it into her hands to pay Saoirse's debt and buy Saoirse herself. Her parents did not approve, but allowed it due to Erica's passion.
Eventually, Erica was selected as a candidate for the Aquarius, but she initially refused the candidacy, instead participating in the lottery that allowed commonfolk to get a spot. She was one of the winners, and gave her spot to Saoirse, before accepting her original nomination. She wouldn't go unless they were together. That was what she'd decided.
Though Erica's team of candidates was made up of low-aptitude individuals, they excelled at every test given, ultimately bringing them to the #1 position. Erica accepted the position of Captain of the Aquarius, so long as all of her team would be accompanying her.
In time, this would lead Erica to become the face of Kumen's interstellar politics and a Kumen celebrity, but her first mission was a voyage to the homeworld, Earth, far away from Kumen.
Things did not go as planned. Everything that could go wrong did, and in the trip to the Alpha Quadrant, Erica lost much of her original crew and forced to work with a team of strangers from another reality.
Fire sometimes forges the strongest bonds, and her relationship with Saoirse became something Erica had never dreamed of as their new lover Yuki joined them. Although it was initially Saoirse's own interest only, Erica did manage to eventually warm up to Yuki as well.
That said, to this day, Erica still wonders what happened to her missing officers from the beginning, Marissa Walker, Kathryn Alers, and... and... who was the other...? She feels guilty for being unable to remember Little.
The voyages of the Aquarius have included numerous unexpected and implausible situations, and Erica negotiated politically with numerous races both known and unknown under the thumb of President Tora, and eventually, President Riki.
Erica even lost her father, getting to work things out with him through a lifelike simulation that may have been more real than it ever appeared, only hours before news came from Kumen of his passing. At this time, the Hildegard Group was transferred to Erica.
Nowadays, Erica is still the Captain of the Aquarius, but she has been roped into Taiga's last hurrah due to her wife Yuki's position as Taiga's daughter. When that ends, she is planning to return to Kumen for a time and sort out the Hildegard Group's business and her father's unfinished affairs, whatever they may be.
